You’ve seen my photos of this dramatic lookout, just a couple miles from our home. A familiar spot, where we check out the surf as we head down to Hanalei Bay.
Most can’t take their eyes off the beautiful bay, surf and mountains. But, if you adjust your gaze to the pasture below you…
…it’s here you’ll see where Kauai’s buffalo roam. The surprizing home to a small herd of North American Bison.
Crossing the historic Hanalei Bridge, will take you along the banks of the Hanalei River, and a closer look at these wonderful, large residents. (Isn’t the baby buffalo in the front sweet?)
If you’re lucky, a nice buffalo will turn and pose for you. Like this beautiful bull did for me. I think he knew I was taking his photo just for my blog. So, I named him Bison Blog.
I thanked Bison Blog for looking my way, then watched as they peacefully wandered away, with egrets hitching rides like small paniolos (cowboys).
Who would have thought of Kauai as a place where the buffalo roam?

So cool! I never saw buffalo on Kauai. I didn’t know they were there. Great shots!
Some locals don’t even know they are here. I love when I spot them, happy you enjoyed the shots.
Yes, we have buffalo, it’s crazy!! When my kids told me first time that they saw buffalo on the way to school, I didn’t believe until I saw them. I heard this guy used to have a lot of them and these are some of the left over.
Yes, sounds like the Hanalei buffalo meat has lots of fans.
Didn’t know you had them on your island either Vic is going to need to find them now.
Will be on the look out for the buffalo and the whales for Vic next month!
